Slowey McManus Communications

The Firm Two Reporters Built

The Business

Slowey McManus Communications has run strategic communications and public relations from Boston's Beacon Hill for nearly twenty years, staffed largely by former journalists who know how a newsroom thinks. The firm places stories for clients every day across media relations, crisis communications, and public policy work, serving organizations in education, energy, healthcare, and the nonprofit world. The model is built on long-running retainers, and more than nine in ten new clients arrive by referral. It grew through the 2008 financial crisis and through COVID.

Jim McManus and Dominic Slowey, both former reporters who later worked around Massachusetts state government, founded the firm in 2006 and ran it as equal partners ever since. In their mid-60s and thinking about retirement, they were first-time sellers, and they chose to run the sale themselves on Rejigg rather than hire a broker. They had watched peers sell their agencies into larger firms and come away unhappy, so their conditions were fixed from the first call: protect the employees, protect the client relationships, keep the firm's identity, and stay on through a real transition.

How the Deal Happened

The firm came to market on Rejigg in September 2025 and drew nineteen buyer conversations, with twelve buyers reaching meetings, from Boston, Dallas, Washington, and Atlanta. Adi Sarosa connected in mid-November and had a homefield advantage: he lived twenty minutes away and proposed meeting over lunch at their office. Ten meetings followed across three months, from financial deep-dives to lunch with the leadership team, before the LOI was signed in February 2026. Diligence and SBA financing ran through the spring and summer, and the deal closed on August 11, about nine months after the first hello.

Deal Highlights

A Dozen Suitors

Nineteen buyer conversations and twelve buyers in meetings, from across the country.

Twenty Years, First Sale

Two first-time sellers ran the process themselves, no broker involved.

Won on Transparency

The buyer shared his own bank model with the sellers and taught them how a lender reads their firm.

The Local Buyer

The winner lived twenty minutes away and asked to meet over lunch at the office.

The Buyer

Adi Sarosa was born in California, raised in Indonesia, and has called Greater Boston home for a decade. He comes from a family of business owners and spent his career in strategy consulting, marketing, and partnerships, including communications work for a nonprofit. He won the deal on transparency: he opened his own lender model on screen and walked the sellers through exactly how a bank would read their business, then financed the purchase with an SBA loan and his own equity. His plan for the firm starts with a year of listening before any big changes. For two founders wary of a boardroom deciding their team's future, handing the firm to one committed local owner felt like the right ending.
